MLM failure after MLM failure, that’s the way my MLM career began. Sadly, most people give up on MLM before they ever achieve any success whatsoever. What I didn’t know at the time, was that all my failures were actually preparing me for phenomenal MLM success!

You may have failed at MLM over and over again, but have you ever stopped to think what you have learned along the way? If you’ve paid any attention at all you’ve learned a lot more than you probably realize. If nothing else you’ve certainly learned what not to do!

MLM isn’t about convincing people to do anything. Most MLM rookies make this mistake so often you would think that they would begin to understand. The harder you work to convince your prospects that this business will change their lives, the more likely they are to never get involved in the industry.

I had to learn this lesson the hard way even after I had become incredibly successful. It’s entirely possible for you to still be learning valuable lessons even after reaching financial goals that you thought would elude you forever.

Many years ago we were enjoying the tremendous life that MLM success can give you. What I’m really trying to say, without actually saying it, is that I wasn’t really working my MLM business because I didn’t have to. Our company was offering some kind of incentive, it’s been so long that I really can’t remember what it was, but I had been goofing off for so long that I didn’t have any prospects in my prospecting pipeline.

It was the final day of the promotion and I was meeting with a successful businessman and sharing with him how great our business was. By this time I was no longer trying to convince people that my MLM opportunity was right for them, but I was selling really hard that day trying to qualify for that special promotion.

I finished what I knew was a great presentation and there was no doubt in my mind that this guy was going to sign on the dotted line. I was exceptionally proud of myself when my prospect said the words that I will never forget. “Scott, if your business is so awesome why do you have to have me sign up right now?”

My heart sank, and I struggled to answer his question. Then the right words just flew out of my mouth, “I don’t need you to do this right now” I said. Then I thanked him for being honest with me and realized that I had just learned a valuable lesson. Trying to convince people to join your MLM opportunity makes you look desperate!

Sure it’s easy to get frustrated and quit. Just imagine how much better you’ll be if you just stay in the game long enough to learn valuable lessons that will pay huge dividends over the next 5 to 10 years of your life. I’ve shared that story with thousands of people in my MLM business and some of them understood exactly why I was sharing that story with them. So they wouldn’t make the same mistake I did.

That day I blew it. Perhaps at some point in the future that prospect may have joined my team and perhaps he would have been an MLM superstar. That wasn’t going to happen now because I had given him the wrong impression of our industry.

How often do you think MLM rookies make that same mistake? One of the biggest reasons people fail in MLM is that they fail to learn valuable lessons along the way. It’s so much easier to start believing that MLM doesn’t work isn’t it? It can’t be my fault. What if you quit blaming everybody else and started to realize that we all have a lot to learn on the way to success?

Hopefully you’ve got an upline mentor to teach you how not to do this business, but even if you don’t, stay in the game and learn from your own mistakes. You’ll be amazed just how much you can learn and how much better you life will be when you do.

Watching Britney Spears self destruct is eerily similar to how most MLM newbies ruin their shot at life changing success.

I’m not listening to anybody.

If it wasn’t so sad and totally unnecessary perhaps Britney Spears ruining her life in front of our very eyes would be comical. Comedian Dennis Miller refused to make light of the situation in a recent interview because it’s so obvious that Britney doesn’t have a clue.

I’m deeply saddened by MLM newbies all the time as they choose to fail because they won’t listen to anybody, not even the people that want nothing but the best for them. We’ve seen hundreds, perhaps thousands of people come and go in MLM because they wouldn’t even stop to consider the possibility that somebody could help them.

What is it that drives us to go our own way when we make such devastating mistakes in our lives?

Success in MLM is not life or death, however failing to reach our potential and living lives of quiet desperation is cruel and tragic in its own way. What we’ve seen in more than a decade of phenomenal success in MLM invigorates us and saddens at the same time.

Having lived through our own personal “downward spiral” we can come to terms with what Britney is going through and can only hope that our experience, as well as hers, might inspire somebody to turn their life around.

Mired in mediocrity for almost two years, we couldn’t do anything right. Having been a successful radio and TV personality before that awful time in our lives only made it harder to accept the pathetic free fall that we were facing.

And then we found MLM. Sure the money has made a huge difference in our lives but it’s all the other things that our MLM opportunity has given us that has made the biggest difference in our lives.

Why don’t we talk about the personal growth benefits of MLM more often? Perhaps every MLM training should include the personal testimonies of the many lives that have been forever altered for the better, thanks to this much maligned industry.

If only MLM newbies and Miss Spears would start listening, perhaps they too, would find a much better life. So many lives could be so much better if only we would open our ears more often.

Success in MLM , as in life, doesn’t have to be as difficult as we make it.

I can do whatever I want to.

One of the reasons we love MLM so very much is that we own our own business. We are not required to report to work at a certain time or perform a task that we cannot stand wearing a certain kind of clothing that we would rather not wear.

In MLM we are our own boss, something we cherish but something that frequently causes well intentioned MLM newbies to fail. Although we haven’t heard Britney say it, the way she blatantly ignores the words of all who care about her, implies that she relishes the opportunity to remind the world that she can do whatever she wants to.

Such is the battle cry of many an MLM failure! It’s my business and I can run it any way I want to.

Yes you can, but sadly with that attitude you will, most likely, fail to achieve any success whatsoever.

Like we said before, if it wasn’t so tragic, it would be comical.

Heartache and frustrations within the realm of MLM can be directly tied to unrealistic expectations from its dreamy enthusiasts.  I know, because I was one for many years.  To this day, I still devote a lot of my training and coaching efforts to achieving a proper balance in the minds of my new members.To recruit or sponsor an inexperienced MLM’er into a program under the guise of earning large sums of money without first establishing what’s REALLY required to attain that earning level is – to be blunt – misleading at best.MLM boasts more self-made millionaires than mainstream America – yet, its high failure rates for Average Joe doom it to remain infamous as a money scheme or sucker play.  Successful veterans know this characterization is not accurate. But, few do much to improve the situation. I can’t discuss every aspect of the dilemmas that haunt the business anomaly called MLM in this article.  However, since I mentioned the realities and illusions of pay plans, let’s dig into that.Compensation Concepts and other Common Confusion: What type of pay plan is best?  How do they really work?  In reality, rest assured, there are only a handful of basic concepts – each with its own pluses and minuses.  Your growing experience will eventually improve your ability to discern what’s best for you.Do I have to be an expert? The newer you are to the MLM industry, the simpler the pay plan should be.  Fewer hoops to jump through – few, if any, volume requirements just to get paid. Each new income opportunity introduces its version of “the best plan yet.”  In reality, 99.9% are just variations on an old theme – presented with a fresh coat of paint.  You do NOT have to be an expert on your pay plan to be successful. But, you DO need to know if it offers realistic potential based on YOUR skill level.  And you should at least be somewhat familiar with how your earnings are generated from the sales on the first 2 levels.Properly building the first 2 levels – or generations – on your sales force will cause the rest of the plan to work in your favor as your downline gains depth and volume.  You don’t really have to fully understand how the lower generations pay you – to get started. If you can’t build a productive foundation on the first 2 levels, you’ll never reach the lower levels anyhow.How Can They Pay Out 75 to 90%? Honestly, they can’t. That’s an obvious truism of any business. No company can survive on such a small profit margin.  To fully understand MLM pay plans, you have to recognize that they have built-in buffers and margins, better known as “breakage” or “blockage.”  These include multiple purchase levels and various other qualifiers.  MLM’er A is only eligible to earn on 3 levels while MLM’er B has qualified to earn through 7 levels.  This skews the company averages.These factors affect the ACTUAL company-wide gross pay out ratios.  If MLM Company X claims to pay out 80% commissions to its sales force, this means that 80% is their maximum pay out liability to any marketer who fits into a “perfect world” scenario and maximizes every aspect of the pay plan.  In the real world, this rarely happens. And when it does, it merely adds fuel to the motivational fire for everyone who is not fully maximizing the pay plan.  “See? He did it. I can too!”Yet, for each solitary MLM’er who might maximize the pay plan, there are thousands who don’t. So the law of averages keeps the company-wide pay out much lower than advertised.  Having worked behind the scenes for several MLM companies myself, I can tell you that the average pay out is only about 50-55%.  I worked with a trend-setting company back in the 90’s that actually got as high as 63% actual pay out on a plan that offered over 80%.  Again, they were an exception to the norm.What Should I Worry About? As a newbie, or MLM rookie, evaluate what you will earn on a sale.  Typically, this is when you sponsor another member who makes a purchase.  Then, what will you earn when THEY do the same? Calculate this early earning potential against what you must invest in personal purchases, marketing expenses, time and effort.  Determine if this equation will get you to the POINT OF NO RETURN within 90 to 120 days, assuming you work effectively and get consistent results.  (PONR is discussed in other articles I’ve written)  You must understand that you will undoubtedly operate at a loss initially. But, your goal is to reach profit within a reasonable timetable – and reach PONR shortly thereafter.What About Retail? Legitimate MLM opportunities must include the ability to earn without sponsoring. That means, retailing of the product/service must be a viable option.  In the real world, the majority of MLM sales are made through sponsoring and repurchase by existing marketers.  Retailing is a minute fraction of the overall business.  I consider it gravy to your primary earnings and don’t generally factor it into the equations mentioned above.What Should I Avoid? There’s a list as long as my arm of things to avoid in MLM. But, since we’re discussing pay plans, rookies should avoid binary programs.  Binary plans are based on 2 sales organizations beneath you – 2 downlines – or 2 legs as they are commonly called.While I won’t get into all the pros and cons of the structure offered by binaries, I do want to highlight the major drawback for MLM rookies.  These plans pay you on accumulated volume, not per sale.  That means you have to accumulate multiple sales and generally have to achieve a ratio of volume balance between the 2 legs. Seasoned marketers are better suited to the downline management required in binaries and can usually afford to satisfy the volume requirements BEFORE getting a check. However, most newbies can’t – period.Whether you are a MLM rookie or an experienced home business expert, you should consider programs that appeal to Average Joes of the world. Have you ever stopped to think about why most people fail in MLM business? Why is it that some people experience life changing success and others never get their MLM business off the ground?

Certainly the lack of quality MLM training can often be the cause for failure, but why is it that some people who get great training still fail?

Belief

That’s why people fail. They just don’t believe that they can have success. Perhaps someday almost all people will come to the realization that MLM works, and that it can work for them. That someday will happen for you if you can truly understand and believe.

Belief #1 – You must believe in your MLM company

When you get started in MLM you probably believe in the MLM concept, it just makes sense, but a lot of people join an MLM company they will never believe in. You leave this exciting meeting and you’ve met people just like you who are changing their lives and it’s easy to get excited. But, when that excitement wears off, do you really believe in the company you just joined?

If you don’t believe in the company, you’ll never talk to anybody about it, and when asked what happened to your new business you will say something like “I tried that and it didn’t work”.

Build belief in your MLM company by asking questions, going to meetings, talking with successful people and putting yourself in a supportive environment. Read all the literature and participate in the webinars and conference calls, immerse yourself in this new world. If you don’t believe in your MLM company you have no shot at success!

Belief #2 – You must believe in your MLM company’s products or services

You must be a product of the product. You’ve probably heard it before, but have you done it consistently? Do you know your products or services backwards and forwards because you’ve used them? Would you sell them to your mother or best friend?

We were able to save more than $100,000 with our service, the same service that we market for $39.95 a month. Don’t you think our belief level is sky high? Nobody believes more than we do!

Sure, sales people can sell anybody anything, but most multi-level marketers aren’t great sales people. People with integrity have to believe in what they’re doing or they won’t do it. Use the same products you’re attempting to market or you won’t ever achieve long term success.

Belief #3 – You must believe in MLM

This is where almost everyone struggles mightily. I’d like to believe in MLM, but all I’ve ever done is fail. Take it from a former MLM loser, anybody with desire and time can be successful in MLM.

Study the industry, talk to people who are living lives on their terms and you will begin to believe. Get as close as you possibly can to successful multi level marketers and ask them what has helped them become successful.

We’ve got friends who didn’t believe in MLM until we took a 7 week vacation! Hearing about success is one thing, knowing somebody who has taken a 7 week vacation is a whole different ballgame.

Belief #4 – You must believe in yourself

Even if you totally believe in your MLM company and your company’s products and believe in the MLM industry, none of that matters if you don’t believe that you can become successful. Most of us carry a lot of baggage with us all of our lives.

The failures in our past do not have to predict our future, but all too often we let those failures trap us into thinking that we cannot escape. We believe that we cannot escape poverty, even though we can.

A very good friend of ours grew up in the projects on the south side of Chicago. His mother believed that she could find a better life for her children, so she moved her family, and in the process dramatically altered the lives of generations. Her children and grandchildren are different because of her sacrifice.

They are different because she believed!

We met her son and shared our belief that MLM could change his life and the lives of his children. Today our friend earns 6 figures in our MLM company, a fact that we are both thankful for.

When you develop all 4 of the beliefs in this article you will be given the opportunity to shape and change the lives of people you would have never met any other way. Prepare yourself by working on these beliefs so that when the opportunity arrives for you to play a role in life changing success in the lives of others, you are prepared.
